Kitty Haber ziet hoe joodse vrouwen en mannen gedwongen worden om straten te schrobben met handborstels. Joden worden verdreven uit hun appartementen, inboedels worden op straat gegooid. Het leven van de familie Haber is in gevaar. Antwerpen, december 1938. Samuel Haber, vader van Kitty, komt veilig aan in Antwerpen, twee maanden later volgen Kitty en haar broer. Antwerpen, 17 april 1939. Het dode lichaam van Kitty's moeder wordt neergelegd in de trappenhal van een huis in de Kievietstraat waar haar man op een kamer woont. Ze werd doodgeschoten door een overijverige Nederlandse grenswacht toen ze via mensensmokkelaars naar België probeerde te ontkomen. Haar broer Erwin vertrekt in 1941 nietsvermoedend met het eerste transport uit de Dossinkazerne naar Polen. Hij werpt twee briefjes uit de trein die als bij wonder de familie bereiken. Zijn laatste teken van leven. De vader komt om in het concentratiekamp van Madjanek in 1943. Kitty zelf overleeft de oorlog, dankzij een briefkaart. CYRIL RUBENS is historicus.
